Some Pointers on “Holistic”
Lifestyle for you and your Pet
I get asked quite often, “What do you mean
you take care of your dog holistically? When you take care of your pets
holistically, it’s not just giving them a handful of supplements and
thinking that they will magically cure a problem. Holistic care means
looking at the “whole pet” and that includes diet, nutritional
supplements, preventive care, controlling parasites and
exercise.
Below are some things to consider that I
have incorporated into a holistic lifestyle for myself and my pet.
-
Remember that supplements only serve
to “supplement” proper diet and proper exercise
-
Read the labels! Learn what the
ingredients are and the risks involved. Be cautious of insecticides,
disinfectants, solvents and chemicals that have warning labels.
Products that are labeled with the word “Danger” are the most toxic.
Products labeled with the word “Warning” means lower toxicity.
-
Use natural cleaning products in your
home.
-
Avoid pesticides in your yard
-
Herbal, remedies are best used in
support of what the body is naturally designed to do, heal itself
and stay healthy. Alternative remedies serve to “stimulate or
support” natural body functions, which means that a proper diet,
exercise, and a healthy living environment need to be in place as
well.
-
When thinking holistically, think
about the root issues when it comes to your pet’s health.
-
Don’t be afraid…ask questions of your
vet, research and study your options.
-
Make sure you have a clear
understanding about the common adverse reactions and side effects of
any prescription drugs and natural remedies.
-
Consider the idea of unnecessary and
over-vaccination. There are many things we would never do to
ourselves or our children, but we may not even think twice about
when it comes to pets.
